The free flight aviary for Tropical Birds (1993)
Various tropical birds from the rain forests of Central and South America live and breed in the free flight aviary. Attentive visitors can discover a small part of the South American rainforest whilst being shown the dangers to this natural habitat.
Even as early as 1960, when the aviary was constructed with the help of the Zoo Society, there were discussions about extending an area to allow the birds to fly around freely which, unfortunately, due to the cost wasn't carried out then. However, in 1993 the Zoo Society could finally invest in their largest financial project at the time and donated DM 1,250,000.
