Rehabilitation centre for Penguins and Seabirds in South Africa
Together with many other zoological gardens and the World Zoo Organisation, WAZA, the Wuppertal Zoo and the Wuppertal Zoo Society in 2006 supported the construction of a new rehabilitation centre for Penguins and Seabirds in South Africa. The Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds (SANCCOB) that operates the centre, was given
€ 5,550. This is the largest single amount provided worldwide by a zoo to support this project.
The Zoo Society generated the money for this project by selling plaster penguins during the PINGUINALE 2006. In agreement with the Zoo Society, the Wuppertaler Rundschau commissioned the making of the plaster penguins and sold them with great success. The Zoo Society received a share from each plaster penguin sold, the final amount of which was made available to the conservation project.
