Wuppertal Zoo Society - Nature conservation

In 2009 the Zoo Society supported a project by the Zoological Gesellschaft für Arten- und Populationsschutz e.V. (ZGAP) to research and protect Red-headed Vultures in Cambodia. The Red-headed Vulture (Sarcogyps calvus) is a highly endangered species of bird in south and southeast Asia. The birds play a key role in ecosystems by eliminating carcasses and sources of disease. One of the last populations of about 50 birds exists in Cambodia. Information is being collected for a dissertation about population, breeding, food ecology and conflicts with humans. The results will enable a more efficient and effective protection of the species.
