Wuppertal Zoo Society (Zoo-Verein Wuppertal e.V.)
Nature conservation
The regulations concerning the protection of endangered species for the Zoo Society were anchored very early on in the Zoo Society's constitution. As a result, with their help, breeding stations not accessible to the general public were developed for the endangered Bali Starling from Indonesia and the Lion Tamarins from Brazil. The Zoo Society also supports on-site projects that aid the research and protection of endangered species and their environments:
- Bird conservation project on Madagascar (Vogelpark Walsrode Fonds e.V.)
- Rehabilitation centre for Penguins and Sea Birds in South Africa (SANCCOB)
- Resettlement of zoo-bred Kagus in New Caledonia
- Save the Drill (Rettet den Drill e.V.)
- Protection Project for the South Andean Deer (Huemul) in Chile
- Resettlement of the Midwife Toad in Bergischen Land
- Penguins in the South Atlantic (Royal Zoological Society of Scotland)
- Penguin research and protection (Antarctic Research Trust)
- Red-headed Vultures in Cambodia (ZGAP)
- Protection and study of Black-footed Cats in South Africa
- Research and protection of elephants (International Elephant Foundation)
- Research and protection of polar bears (Polar Bears International)
In 2007 the Zoo Society organised a charity concert for the conservation of endangered species.
